How will the University notify faculty, staff and students in the event of a crisis?

The University Alert Notification System includes several methods of communication that may be used to notify the campus community in the event of an emergency:

  • Text message alerts may be sent to registered cell phones stating the type of emergency and indicating possible action;
  • Voice mail, email and the web may update students and others about a potentially threatening situation;
  • The Code Blue Phone Kiosks may broadcast a message and flash lights when there is a campus-wide emergency. There are Code Blue Phone Kiosks located at all UConn campuses;
  • Outdoor sirens may be activated on UConn campuses as appropriate to alert persons who are not in buildings.

 

How will alert.uconn.edu be used in the event of an emergency?

Should an emergency occur, the university will activate the Alert Notification System. Information and instructions regarding the emergency situation will be posted as it is available on the alert.uconn.edu website.

 

How does the text message alert service work, and how do I register my cell phone?

How do I get the alert banner installed on my website?

The University has developed an automatic alert banner system that will be activated in the event of an emergency across all websites on the UConn domain using the University’s web template system. Please contact the Help Center at University Information Technology Services (UITS) directly for more information at (860) 486-4357 or visit webtools.uconn.edu.

 

If I am on a UConn web page, how will I know there is an emergency?

In the event of a University-wide emergency, an alert banner will appear on University of Connecticut homepages. The red alert banner will link directly to alert.uconn.edu.

 

What is the best course of action to take in an emergency situation?

What to do in an emergency:

  • Remain calm, use common sense, and give assistance as needed
  • Evacuate buildings immediately upon request of authorities, upon hearing an alarm, or when remaining inside is dangerous or life-threatening
  • Know the location of at least two emergency exits close to your working/living areas
  • If you need to report an emergency, call 911

 

What NOT to do in an emergency:

  • Do not use the telephone except to report the emergency
  • Do not use elevators in the event of a fire
  • Do not jeopardize your life or the lives of others by attempting to save personal or University property
  • Do not cross police barriers without authorization
  • Do not exceed your training or knowledge when attempting to render first aid
